Authority slates annual Pleasants County electronics recycling day

An annual electronics recycling collection will be held from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Momentive Performance Materials Plant, 10851 Energy Highway, in Friendly.

Sponsored by the Pleasants County Solid Waste Authority, all residents of nearby counties, non-profits and small businesses can drop off any broken or unwanted electronic equipment. Individuals or businesses with more than 20 items to recycle should call (304) 652-8413 or (304) 6528487 to make special arrangements prior to the event.

The collection has been hosted by Momentive for 17 years. More than 614,000 pounds of electronics have been recycled to date.

The event will be held regardless of the weather.

Products accepted are AC adapters, portable air conditioners, batteries except vehicle batteries, cell phones, computers and laptops with computer and laptops parts and components, docking stations, electrical components, electrical motors, film and digital cameras, fans and electrical heaters, gaming systems, household electronics, ink and toner cartridges, keyboards and mice, LCD monitors and TVs, light ballasts, microwaves, shredders, small household appliances such as toasters, coffee makers, can openers and blenders, software, stereo and video equipment, residential and business telephones, transformers, two-way communications equipment, battery backups, Wi-Fi equipment and wire and cables.

Not accepted are large household appliances such as refrigerators and washing machines, hazardous materials such as mercury-containing lamps, thermostats and smoke detectors, household hazardous wastes, CDs, video or cassette tapes and light bulbs. Intact CRT monitors and televisions will be accepted, but those previously stripped will not be accepted.

The event is free and a collaboration of Momentive Performance Materials, Pleasants County Solid Waste Authority, the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection and Tri-State E-Scrap of Cleves, Ohio. Funding is from Covered Electronic Devices Grant Program, a grant program created by the passage of the 2008 Senate Bill 746 with additional funding, staffing, and materials provided by Momentive.
