Wayward Dancers launches Youth Belly Dance Class at Parkersburg YMCA
PARKERSBURG – Wayward Dancers, formed in August 2023, recently introduced a youth class for participants ages 15 and under in response to growing interest from younger students. The class, currently called “Wee-ward Dancers,” meets from 2 to 3 p.m. Sundays and focuses on basic movements and beginner-friendly props such as veils, wings, baskets and flags.
Classes for ages 16 and older are held from 7 to 8 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, featuring more advanced techniques and additional props including zills, tambourines, hand drums and swords.
The group’s primary style is Tribal Fusion, drawing from American Tribal Style and American Cabaret influences. Instructors Erica Lonas and Leah Allen bring a combined 20 years of belly dance experience, along with backgrounds in other performance arts.
Organizers said performances are optional but encouraged to help build confidence and support personal growth. Proceeds from performances are donated to local charities.
Wayward Dancers have appeared at a variety of community events, including multicultural festivals, parades and seasonal celebrations.
