Buttrey runner-up at Jr. Girls Match Play event
VIENNA – Neither Williamstown’s Madilyn Buttrey and Ellie West from Wheeling would budge down the final few holes of Sunday’s Girls Junior Match Play Championship at Parkersburg Country Club.
After the two girls were all square for five straight holes, West’s par on the 18th hole proved to be the difference in a 1-up victory over Buttrey.
On Saturday, both Buttrey and Kanzie Armstrong of Belmont passed their first test in the quarterfinal round. After winning four of the first six holes, Buttrey eased past Alexis Green of Charleston 6 & 5.
Armstrong, on the other hand, pulled off quite the dramatic finish after falling behind by three through 12 holes. Armstrong won five of the final seven holes, including her par on No. 18 which resulted in a 1-up win over Chastyn Viars from South Charleston.
In the semifinals, Buttrey won three of the final five holes in her match to defeat Bridgeport’s Audrey Kerr 2-up. In the other semifinal, Armstrong fell behind West by three through 13 holes. Even though Kerr never won another hole, Armstrong’s comeback bid fell short by one as the two golfers tied the final holes.
In Sunday’s final, West won the first three holes and remained two ahead through 10 holes. Buttrey put herself back in contention by taking the next two holes.
On the boys side, Parkersburg South senior Cam Fallon won his two matches on Saturday but was defeated by Chapmanville’s Justus Mann 1-up in Sunday’s semifinal round. Mann took the first three holes before Fallon eventually squared the match by the 11th hole.
The two golfers both won a hole on the back nine to keep it even until Mann took a one-hole advantage by winning No. 16. They finished out their round by tying on the final two holes.
On Saturday, Fallon’s tournament path opened with a 1-up win over Morgantown’s Owen Estel. With the match all square, Fallon birdied No. 18 to prevent extra holes.
Fallon then defeated Carson Higginbotham of Clarksburg, 4 & 3 in the quarterfinals. Fallon had a four-hole advantage just six holes into the match.
Also competing in the event was Elizabeth’s Jude Walker, who played Bridgeport’s Alex Randolph in the Round of 16. With the match all square through 11 holes, Randolph reeled off four wins in the next five holes and won 4 & 2.
