PARKERSBURG — It was all Huntington here Friday inside the Erickson All-Sports Facility during the Mountain State Athletic Conference championships as the Highlanders claimed both team crowns for the fifth straight spring.

The HHS girls of Justin Cox, who was named the MSAC Coach of the Year, had a double-winner thanks to Aleigha Myers (400, 1:01.31; 300H, 46.00). Huntington finished with 138 points to top runner-up Parkersburg’s 88 as Hurricane (70.5), Cabell Midland (70) and Woodrow Wilson (59) rounded out the top five team scores.

Huntington’s boys, who were involved in two of the three meet records, amassed 146.5 points to finish ahead of Cabell Midland (121), the Big Reds (98.5), Hurricane (70) and Capital (67).

The Cougars’ Damian Johnson, who beat Highlander Tayveon Wilson in the 100 (10.92 to 11.00) and George Washington’s Alex Petersen in the 200 (22.06 to 22.16), claimed high-point honors with 25.

Johnson, who saw head coach Willie Ruffin join Cox as MSAC COY, finished fourth in the 400 behind (49.66) behind Parkersburg’s AJ Payne (48.85), Petersen (49.35) and Highlander Sean Andrews (49.38).

Although Javel Chandler of Parkersburg ran a 14.68 to win gold in the 110 hurdles, the Big Red had to settle for third in the 300 hurdles ahead of fourth-place Jordan Foster of Parkersburg South. Highlander Carter Geveke clocked in at 38.21 to set a new meet record, which had been held by Parkersburg’s Evan Rhodes since 2014 (38.40).

Geveke joined teammates Johnathan Garrett, Kellen Rife and Mason Little to run a 56.64 in the shuttles, which broke the previous record of 57.00 set by Cabell Midland back in 1998.

The only other meet record came thanks to the girls from Hurricane as they finished the 4×8 in 9:46.30 with Mackenzie Cloud, Sofie Zappitelli, Ella Dye and Ella Sturm. Cabell Midland had set the record a year ago with a time of 9:48.45.

Parkersburg’s girls had their top finish thanks to Mya Baruwa clearing 5 feet, 6 inches in the high jump, which was good for second as Riverside’s Jada Ward cleared 5-6 first. Ward, who won the 200 with a time of 26.17, secured high-point honors with 26.

PHS also had runner-up efforts in the 3200 with Morgan Metz finishing behind CM’s Savannah Pritt in the 3200 (11:28.54 to 11:30.67) and in the 100 hurdles where Daysha Hastings was edged by Highlander Milleah Johnson (14.96 to 15.86).

Riverside received a pair of golds from Ava Ward, who just nicked Parkersburg South’s Kymani Prince in the long jump (16-2.5 to 16-2.25) while also securing the 100 crown by nipping South Charleston’s Chrishiah Perkins, 12.87 to 12.90.

In the 800, CM’s Adalyn Cantrell won with a time of 2:19.63 while Hurricane’s Francy Tidd ran a 5:13.15 to claim the 1600. GW’s Ava Mitias finished runner-up in each event.

Also finishing atop the podium in individual events for the girls were Huntington’s Laurel Johnson (pole vault, 9-0), Hurricane’s Jenna Geter (shot put, 36-8) and Riverside’s Cianna Groom (discus, 137-7).

Aside from Payne in the 400, the Parkersburg boys also had first-place efforts thanks to Rogan Mincks in the 800 (1:57.84), Carter Thorpe in the 1600 (4:24.05), Javel Chandler in the 110 high hurdles (14.68) and Drey Grinter, who won the shot put crown with a throw of 52 feet, 3 inches.

Parkersburg’s boys also claimed the only area relay title and that nearly resulted in a new MSAC record, which the Big Reds had set a year ago (3:25.28). However, the anchor Payne along with Landen Deuley, Gavin Bowman and Mincks finished in 3:25.42.

Kelly won by half a foot as South’s Drake Laughery finished runner-up with Patriot teammate Shawn Thornhill (11-6) and Big Red Alex Greer (11-0) following.
